Women Prefer Poaching

As a follow-up to my previous post on why beautiful women don’t get approached, according to one study, women supposedly prefer to poach as in mate poaching. Being surrounded by women enhances the attractiveness of a man when compared to men who are by themselves or surrounded by other men. On the other hand, men find women surrounded by other men to be less attractive. The comments that follow the article put forth the following biological theory to explain it: men who are surrounded by women or are in an established relationship suggests that he is capable of raising a family compared to those who are alone or with other men. This is a desirable quality in a mate especially in a species that takes as long as humans do to mature and requires substantial parental investment from the male. On the flip side, going after women who are already in a relationship or might be involved in one makes it difficult for the man to be sure of the paternity of the resulting children, which makes substantial parental investment by the male a risky proposition. Biologically speaking, males are never sure of the paternity of his children while the female can always be (or until DNA tests were invented and our instincts haven’t caught up to the technology). Perhaps this is why the polyandrous societies are so rare compared to polygyny ones.

Well time for plan B, C, D, … J: surround myself with women. Wait, there’s a bit of circular logic in that.

  1. I’m not sure how much I buy into the biological or evolutionary theories of dating in general, but I have to agree with the main point: to get women, surround yourself with women.

  2. But how does one surround himself with women? How do you bootstrap that process?

  3. Yes, there’s the rub, eh? You could start with a cooking class (in all your free time) since cooking is a hobby of yours – I’d wager those classes attract mostly women, and you’d have an instant topic of conversation. And there’s always knitting. :)

  4. I’ve actually been thinking about taking cooking classes. The problem is the area I live in is very expensive and single women don’t generally live here. Single guys do but that’s because we’re willing to put up with asbestos infested studios.
