Are You an Eco-Douchebag
Simple test for if you’re an eco-douchebag.
Thankfully, I’m not. In fact, I’m kind of a bandwagon, fair weather organic food eater. I’ll eat organic if it is cheaper or around the same price as non-organic food. I go to Whole Foods for three reasons: whole wheat baguette, dry aged steaks, and foreign beers like Spaten and Kronenburg. Most of the time I go to either Trader Joe’s or just Safeway. Call me a jerk but when I see spots on organic fruits, I start singing Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi” in my head with modified lyrics, “Take away the birds and the bees but no spots on my apples, please”. It doesn’t even match the music but that’s how cynical I am about it sometimes. Speaking of cynicism, the whole controversy over Whole Food’s CEO’s op-ed piece against health care reform, just makes the cynic inside me laugh. Anyone who’ve been to this site knows that I’m all for health care reform but I love the fact that a right wing CEO is running Whole Foods. Is that not the height of cynicism? Give the treehuggers what they want but charge them an arm and a leg for it. As Michael Pollan points out, not everything in Whole Food’s is as wholesome as the marketing material suggests.
