The Hurt Locker
Not only does the Hurt Locker have a cool name, the actual movie itself is among the best “war” movie I’ve seen in a while. The closest analog I can think of would be Black Hawk Down because they’re both about the realities of modern war. There are also depictions of squad level interaction but in the case of the Hurt Locker, the interaction between the team members take the center stage. It’s about the dynamics of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal squad, reflecting the importance it plays in actual EOD squads. Each member has his role and are dependent on each other in keeping the team alive. When that dynamic changes the team must deal with it. In addition, the film also captures the confusion and tense atmosphere in the occupation of Iraq. Not only do the bombs add to the uncertainty, Iraqi insurgents that blend into the population or appear out of nowhere adds another angle to that. Will the bomb go off? Is there someone sneaking up to take a shot? Is the man behaving strangely an insurgent or just misunderstood?
The movie is written by Mark Boal who was embedded with an actual bomb squad. As a four star arm chair general, I would say it’s pretty accurate in its details and depictions of war and IEDs. This movie is a treat for military buffs.
The Hurt Locker deserves a five out of five stars. It is intense without ever giving you room to breath. Don’t drink too much before going because there is no good time for bathroom breaks. This is an Oscar worthy film.
